Our incredible DEXA body composition scan in Perth allows us to see inside your body to monitor your fitness, athletic condition and assess for serious health risks.
What is it?
The DEXA body scan, or Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry scan, is a bone density scan that determines the exact makeup of your body including fat, muscle and bone percentages.
Why use the DEXA body scan?
Having a DEXA scan before and after a weight loss or fitness program is a great way to accurately track your progress and see the benefits. The advanced technology makes the DEXA body scan much more informative than standing on your ordinary scales, or gimmicky fat measuring gadgets. Many athletes and keen sportspeople use DEXA scans to fine tune their diet and training regimes.
With our DEXA scan we will be able to check that your bone density is not dangerously low. Osteopaenia or osteoporosis, caused by low bone mineral density, can greatly increase your risk of fractures, but can be treated when caught early.
What are the risks?
The dose of X-ray used for our body composition scan is very small. This means that the risks are very low as this dose is less than 1/10th of the strength of a standard X-ray machine. The scan itself takes between 10 and 30 minutes and there are no after effects.
What are the costs involved with a DEXA scan?
We charge $140 for a weekday DEXA body composition scan in Perth, which includes a 20 minute consultation with our dietitian and nutritionist, and a full explanation of your results. You may be eligible for a private health insurance rebate for the dietitian consult. Without a dietitian consultation, a weekday body composition scan in Perth will cost $90. For weekend appointments the fees are $120 for a DEXA scan. Before your scan, you will see one of our doctors for a consultation and referral form (bulk-billed), so no referral from your own doctor is required.
With our DEXA scan in Perth we will be able to give you all the information you need about your bone health, and whether you have low bone calcium (osteopenia, or in its more severe form osteoporosis). Taking action early can greatly reduce your risk of bone fractures in the future.
The DEXA scan in Perth is also ideal for female athletes whose level of training causes them to have infrequent or absent periods. We recommend them to have scans to help check for loss of bone calcium.
