IPL vs Laser Hair Removal
IPL vs Laser Hair Removal
Intense pulsed light treatments versus laser hair removal
Everyone wants to look good for their partner, right? The truth is that people have hair in places that they would rather not. And most of us have so little time in our day that to keep shaving those sensitive areas over and over again – well it’s annoying and frustrating.
So, that natural thing to do is to look for a permanent hair removal solution. But what do we choose?
We want something that is safe, hassle-free and long lasting. Well, generally there are 2 methods to choose from: IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) OR Medical Laser treatment.
What’s the difference between Laser and IPL?
Medical Laser Hair Removal
This treatment uses a single wavelength or colour of light, all lined up and going in the same direction.
The enables the Laser to target the pigment at the base of the hair follicle, rapidly heating it and killing the hair follicle permanently. Because it’s so precisely controlled, there’s little or no effect or damage to surrounding skin, and it can be used on all skin types. Put simply, less treatments are needed (usually between 3 and 6), with less risk of side effects.
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)
IPL is like a powerful camera flash. It uses a much broader range of colours, with light going in all directions. That means that it affects the surrounding skin much more, potentially causing damage such as burns.
There is a higher risk of pigmentation problems, especially on darker skin. More treatments are needed as it’s not zoning-in on the hair follicles so effectively.
Why is IPL So Much Cheaper?
- The equipment is much less sophisticated and less expensive.
- It’s much less regulated – anyone can operate an IPL machine – they may have little or no training. You can’t be sure that you are in safe hands.
With Medical Laser depilation you have the reassurance of knowing that a specially trained and registered doctor who carries the appropriate insurance is providing your treatment.
Be aware that a lot of sites advertise that they are using Laser when in fact they are using IPL – so check carefully!
