Plasma therapies or PRP, can be used to treat joint problems in the body. Injection of the platelet-rich plasma into the target area stimulates natural rejuvenation and repair, using the body’s own healing mechanisms. No artificial substances or drugs are needed, and there is no risk of transmitting disease from blood or allergic reactions, as it is entirely your own tissue that is being used.
Areas which can be treated include tennis and golfer’s elbow, Achilles tendonitis, shoulder / rotator cuff problems and osteoarthritis of the knee. Your doctor will discuss with you a personalised management plan, which may also include physiotherapy and/or an exercise program.
The treatment usually takes 45-60 minutes and you should not exercise vigorously for several days afterwards. No time off work is expected to be required.
Improvement will be a gradual process over the course of weeks or months. When compared to cortisone injections, the benefits take longer to see but last much longer.
Sometimes after treatment you will have a bruised sensation in the area. This usually lasts just a few hours to a couple of days. In the case of any severe pain, please call us for a review appointment.
You may require several treatments, often three, with an interval of 1-2 weeks between injections. Annual top-ups may be recommended.
Platelet Rich Plasma Therapies can also be used for Skin Rejuvenation
